Identifying Your Skin Type.

July 14, 2021 2 min read

Before buying any skincare products you should understand your skin and what it needs, for you to build a skin care routine tailored to your skin type. It is also important to note that it can change over the years due to the UV exposure, environment, age, hormones etc. Overloading your skin with oils could decrease in natural oil production and using harsh stripping products can dry up your skin to the point where your skin barrier is weakened. These factors can all lead to even more dryness, dullness, redness, sensitivity and breakouts. Balance is key in maintaining your skin.

skin type

As we all know that there are four skin type oily, combination, normal and dry. But how can we determine what is our skin type?

To find out precisely what your skin type is, can be done in two ways. The most common way is the Bare Faced Method. Start by washing your face with a foaming cleanser and leave to dry naturally or by using a face towel. Leave your skin for 20 minutes without applying any skincare products after cleansing and examine how your skin looks and feels.

Does your skin feel tight? Is it red? Does it still appear shiny?

If its red this likely means that your skin is on the sensitive side. If its tight that means it is on the dry side. If these do not apply to you that means that you may have normal to combination skin. Oily skin types will feel fine, but the skin will still appear a little shiny in the typical zones, forehead, nose and chin. If you feel any tightness in the cheek area after smiling this likely means that you have combination to dry skin.

After identifying what your skin type shopping for skincare should be slightly easier as most websites, like ours, will categories their products into skin concerns. What’s down is your own research to understand how the product is used and how to incorporate it into your skin care through reviews etc.
